Jody Perkins Ryan dedicates her practice to defending and counseling employers on employment, workers compensation and business matters. As a result of this combination of practice areas, Ms. Ryan uses a business-centered approach to advise employers how to manage employment relationships. When addressing workforce issues, Ms. Ryan assists employers to develop and tailor policies and procedures in the work place; implement those policies and procedures as best practices; and, enforce violations that threaten to harm the employer. Her employment practice includes ADA, FMLA, disability, age, sex, discrimination, wrongful termination and retaliatory discharge claims as well as general discipline and termination issues. She has appeared before the federal and state courts, EEOC, Ohio Civil Rights Commission and Department of Jobs & Family Services.
In the unfair competition and trade practice area, Ms. Ryan has successfully obtained temporary restraining orders and injunctions to protect employers when employees have broken the terms of their employment agreements. Ms. Ryan has also obtained monetary judgments on behalf of employers who have been damaged as a result of former employees competing unfairly.
In her workers compensation practice, Ms. Ryan defends both state fund and self-insured employers in the manufacturing, food processing, protective services, aviation, construction and skilled nursing industries. This representation includes everything from preventative risk management to defending work place injuries and occupational disease claims in hearings before The Industrial Commission of Ohio, and if necessary, trial and appellate proceedings. This practice regularly includes the investigation and defense of safety violations, permanent and total disability applications and self-insured complaints before the Industrial Commission of Ohio and Bureau of Workers Compensation as well as the defense of employer intentional tort claims in the Ohio courts. Ms. Ryan participates and advises employers including the initial investigation, daily administrative advocacy, trial preparation, arbitration and/or mediation, litigation and settlement negotiation.
Ms. Ryan earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in International Business from Muskingum College and her Juris Doctor from Case Western Reserve University School of Law where she was active in the Journal of International Law.
Ms. Ryan resides in Cleveland, Ohio with her husband and two boys; is a CYO basketball coach; and, is actively involved with school, athletic and community events.
